Pope calls for independent Palestinian state
Monday, 11 May 2009
Pope Benedict XVI has called for the establishment of an independent Palestinian homeland following his arrival in Israel today.
The Pontiff also pledged to "honour the memory" of the six million Jews killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust.
He urged Israelis and Palestinians to "explore every possible avenue" to resolve their differences.
Benedict's visit to the Middle East has attracted attention following the controversy surrounding his recent decision to reinstate a bishop who had denied the scale of the Holocaust.
He also wants to make Pius XII a saint even though critics accuse the wartime pope of failing to stop the mass murder of Jews by the Nazis.
