World Bank president under growing pressure to resign

Tuesday, May 08, 2007

World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz is under fresh pressure to resign today over the scandal involving his girlfriend.

A special committee set up to examine the matter is understood to have concluded that the former Bush administration official breached ethics rules in the way he handled the case.

Mr Wolfowitz has already refused to resign after using his position as president to secure a promotion and pay increase for his girlfriend and fellow World Bank employee Shaha Riza.

One of his senior advisors resigned yesterday, prompting speculation that Mr Wolfowitz may himself follow suit before the end of the week.
