Triptych 1976 sold for $86.3m in New York last night.
The previous record for a Bacon painting was set in 1962 when Study For Innocent X achieved $52.7m at auction.
Triptych 1976 depicts a headless human form surrounded by three vultures and flanked by two portraits of disfigured human faces.
