Obama condemns crackdown on Iran protests
Wednesday, 24 June 2009
US President Barack Obama has condemned the Iranian Government's crackdown on protestors demonstrating against the country's election results.
In a speech yesterday, Mr Obama said he did not want to interfere in Iran's affairs and rejected accusations that the US had been involved in instigating the protests.
He said the US was "appalled and outraged" by the threats made against protestors, as well as beatings and imprisonments.
Yesterday, Iran's ruling clerics ruled out an re-run of the election, saying the vote that led to the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was fair.
