Obama to hold first press conference since election

Friday, 7 November 2008

Barack Obama will hold his first press conference since being elected the next US President later today in Chicago.

He will also meet with his team of economic advisers as the process of putting together his administration continues.

The 47-year-old will take office in the White House in January.

Yesterday he chose Rahm Emanuel to be his chief of staff and David Axelrod to be his senior advisor.

First day as President-elect and Obama - remember his campaign slogan was make a change? - and he wheels in the Old Guard. Emanuel was Bill Clinton's fixer. He helped Clinton survive impeachment in the Senate and his hand was seen everywhere when the going got tough for the Comeback Kid. Expect no miracles from Obama. He is very much a product of the Illinois political machine which specialises in getting out the vote for its Democratic anointed one. Mayor Daley of Chicago helped his old friend Joe Kennedy by installing his son in the White House!
The Democratic party was assisted by having an incumbent President whose poll rating was lower than that of Richard Nixon on the day he resigned.
Bill Clinton's only political frustration was not getting Colin Powell to become his Secretary of State. Largely because he didn't want him as his opponent for a second term. Ironic now if he accepts this office from Obama. The wheel will have turned full circle and I will collect a bet!!!

First press conference: few press conferences in modern history have been so widely anticipated worldwide. The Obama mania is
liable to drive expected viewership" through the roof."
On the agenda will be energy, economic and financial matters, security and the war, transitioning to the White House, the cabinent and staffing of the oval office, and the immediacy of getting things done.
As a figure of monumental change, representing the hopes and desires of a domestic electorate and an international audience eager to hear and see "what this guy is all about" on substantive policy affecting billions of people.
Hold on to your hats, the winds of change are just beginning.
