Top OAS diplomat to visit Honduras today
Friday, 3 July 2009
The head of the Organisation of American States is due to travel to Honduras today to demand the restoration of President Manuel Zelaya, who was ousted in a military coup last weekend.
Mr Zelaya was flown into forced exile in Costa Rica after being detained at gunpoint in the middle of the night.
The OAS has condemned the coup and has warned that it will suspend Honduras if Mr Zelaya isn't back in office by Monday.
Nations across the world have also promised to shun Roberto Micheletti, the new president sworn in earlier this week.
However, the Honduran opposition has ignored the criticism of the international community and is insisting that it will not relinquish power.
Mr Zelaya himself is vowing to return to his country this weekend.
