Paraguay elects left-leaning ex-bishop as President
Monday, April 21, 2008
Paraguay has become the latest South American nation to take a swing to the left following the election of a former Catholic bishop as the country's new President.
Fernando Lugo won a historic victory over the weekend to end more than 60 years of one-party rule by the Colorado Party, which many voters blame for decades of corruption by political elites.
Lugo was elected on a mandate to help the country's poor and indigenous communities.
News of his victory set off massive parties in cities throughout Paraguay.
