Chavez urges FARC to end armed campaign

Monday, 9 June 2008

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has urged FARC rebels to end their 40-year armed campaign against the Colombian Government.

Mr Chavez has been accused by Colombia and the United States of aiding the rebel movement, which has been fighting for a socialist state since the 1960s.

However, the Venezuelan President told his weekly TV and radio programme yesterday that armed guerrilla movements in Latin America were "out of place" and "an excuse for the [US] empire to threaten all of us".

He called on FARC to end its war and free all the hostages it is holding as "a great humanitarian gesture, in exchange for nothing".
