Bodies found in restaurant as quake toll rises

Sunday, 11 January 2009

The Red Cross said searchers have found more bodies in mountain villages in Costa Rica hit by a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that killed at least 18 people.

Search teams continue to look for victims tonight in mounds of loosened earth dislodged by Thursday's quake, and forensics experts confirmed the identities of 9 of the victims, including four children.

Ordinary Costa Ricans began collecting aid and relief donations for the stricken region north of San Jose, the capital.

The 6.1-magnitude earthquake caused a hillside to collapse near Cinchona and damaged 6 miles of road.

Many of the dead were trapped inside vehicles, while others were found inside a collapsed restaurant, Red Cross officials said.
