'Godfather of Soul' James Brown dies aged 73

The Godfather of Soul James Brown has died.

The 73-year-old was admitted to hospital with pneumonia in Atlanta yesterday and died at a 6.45am.

His agent confirmed the news this morning.

His long time friend Charles Bobbit was by his side.

The soul legend had cancelled a number of shows this week but had plans to be back on stage by New Year's Eve.

He was one of the most influential figures in 20th century music and just last week was in his home town Augusta handing out toys to children, something he has done for 15 years.

The cause of his sudden death is still uncertain.
