Mark Kermode is thrilled Tahar Rahim is in the running for the Orange Rising Star award.
The French-Algerian actor, star of award-winning French film A Prophet, is up for the nod, alongside Nicholas Hoult, Carey Mulligan, Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg.
"I was pleasantly surprised by Tahar Rahim being nominated because I'm such a fan of The Prophet and it was great to see him because it was such a great film and I think it's something that deserves as much attention as it can get," he said at the awards launch at Bafta in London.
"They've come up with a really good selection. I kind of expected Carey Mulligan to be on there, that's the person who I would have been surprised if she hadn't been on there."
The acclaimed film critic said while Twilight star Kristen Stewart will have the strong backing of the 'Twi-hards', there's no guarantee she would win.
"There's every possibility Kristen Stewart's fans will be the first to vote because the Twilight fans are very devoted - but just because they start voting first doesn't necessarily mean she's going to win," he added.
"I come from a background of genre films, horror films and I love the fact that film fans can be that obsessive. I think we'll be surprised at just how many people will be voting for the other nominees as well."
The winner will be announced at the Orange British Academy Film Awards on February 21.
