Patrick Dempsey in Transformers 3

Patrick Dempsey will star in Transformers 3

Patrick Dempsey will be taking on the gigantic robots in Transformers 3.

The Grey's Anatomy star - best known for donning scrubs and tackling problems in the medical ward - is set for a "darker" role in the third movie in the action series, where he plays Mikaela Banes' (Megan Fox) boss, reports Variety.

"I start filming later this month - in Transformers 3 I play a character who is far more dark than others I've played," he told Brazilian website BOL.

Patrick's part is said to be "significant to the plot", a spokesperson for Paramount Pictures confirmed.

Shia LaBeouf will reprise his role as Sam Witwicky in the film, to be directed by Michael Bay again.

The Hangover star Ken Jeong and Ghost Whisperer actor Jamie Kennedy are also reported to be on board for the eagerly anticipated follow-up.

Transformers 3 starts shooting later this month in Moscow, China, the US and Africa. It is expected to be released on July 1, 2011.
