Thomas Sangster has revealed he had trouble going to the toilet during the filming of Bright Star - because of the period costumes.

The 19-year-old - who plays Samuel Brawne in the Jane Campion drama, which stars Ben Whishaw as poet John Keats and Abbie Cornish as lover Fanny Brawne - admitted it would take a while to undo the many layers, which would include thermals, double socks and feet warmers during the winter.

"If you want to go to the toilet, your trousers come to halfway up your chest - you have to go through that, and then several layers of thermals," he said.

Thomas took a shine to the straw spiral hat, which he wanted to keep.

"They were fantastic costumes, I really liked them - I wanted to keep the hat afterwards but they wouldn't let me. The spiral top hat with straw was fantastic, I mean all the costumes were amazing," he said.

Sadly for Thomas, many of the pieces were hired.

"With all those fantastic costumes, most of them were hired so it all had to be given back at the end," he added. "Only the modern-day pieces we were allowed to keep afterwards. Most of that stuff was either hired or specially made."

:: Bright Star is available on DVD on March 8 from Pathe Productions Ltd.
