Clarke hailed as hero after European Ryder Cup win

Ireland's Darren Clarke is being hailed as a hero today after helping Europe to a record third successive Ryder Cup victory.

Clarke won all three of the matches he was involved in during the competition at the K Club in Co Kildare over the weekend.

Yesterday, European captain Ian Woosnam dedicated the victory to the Ulsterman's late wife Heather, who died of breast cancer just six weeks ago.

Northern Secretary Peter Hain said today that the people of the North could be justifiably proud of the Co Tyrone man.

Clarke was cheered from tee to green throughout the entire three-day event and finally broke down in tears after his victory in the singles yesterday.

He has since been tipped to be named Sports Personality of the Year on both sides of the Irish Sea.
