Westmeath beat Kildare to win Christy Ring Cup

Published 05/08/2007

Westmeath have won the Christy Ring Cup with ease at a rain-sodden Croke Park, beating Kildare in the final.

It was a very routine victory for Westmeath - they were 2-7 to 0-3 up at half time, and they notched up eight points in the second period, while the Lily Whites got 10.

The first-half goals came from John Shaw on 14 minutes, and Andrew Mitchell on 22 minutes.

The only Kildare scores in the first half were two points from Oisin Lynch and one from Billy White.

It was midfielder White, however, who came into his own in the second half, and his combination of points from frees and from play brought the Lily Whites back into the game.

He finished the match with eight points in all.

But Westmeath, with four points from Daniel Carty, three each for Barry Kennedy and goalscorer Mitchell, were always able to keep their noses out in front.

The final scoreline was Westmeath 2-15, Kildare 0-13.
