Gloucester fly-half Carlos Spencer is to leave the Guinness Premiership club to take up a player-coach role with Super 14 outfit the Lions.

The 34-year-old former All Black has found first-team opportunities hard to come by since the summer signing of Nicky Robinson from Cardiff Blues, and has decided to make the move to the South African side.

Spencer joined the Kingsholm outfit last season after choosing to leave Northampton.

Head coach Bryan Redpath told BBC Radio Gloucestershire: "Carlos has been offered a player-coach role and will be released for that.

"He's available for us for the next two weeks and will be leaving after the Newport Gwent Dragons game."
