Ireland's Fionnuala Britton produced a dominant display to win the Bupa Great Edinburgh Cross Country and claim victory for the European team.

The European cross country champion recovered from falling as she came out of a stream with approximately 500 metres to go to finish in 20 minutes 40 seconds and retain her title over six kilometres in Holyrood Park.

The Great Britain team came second ahead of the United States, with the points calculated over four races.

The hosts had led going into the final women's race after Andy Vernon and Tom Humphries finished third and fourth respectively in an 8km men's race won by American Bobby Mack.

The highest British finisher in the women's race was Jess Coulson, the European Under-23 cross country champion, in fourth.

Julia Bleasdale, who competed over 5,000m and 10,000m at the London Olympics, was eighth.

Britain dominated the junior women's race over 4km, with Emelia Gorecka winning as the hosts occupied the top six places.

Jonathan Davies was the top British finisher in the 6km junior men's race in fourth place.

In an invitational 3km women's race, Briton Emily Stewart came sixth and compatriot Lisa Dobriskey, the former 1500m world silver medallist, seventh in a very strong field.

Stewart finished 19 seconds behind Ethiopian winner Genzebe Dibaba.
