The Government is expected to reduce the age of consent to sixteen, as part of reforms to the law on child protection.
A special Oireachtas committee - which was set up following the statutory rape controversy - is to make the recommendation in a report next week.
The new law will reduce the age of consent by one year, except in the case of adults in positions of authority such as teachers and sports coaches.
