Armed man shot by Gardai after siege at house in Gort

Published 10/10/2006

A 40-year-old man is in stable condition in hospital after being shot by the Gardai following a day-long siege at his house in Co Galway yesterday.

The man barricaded himself into the house on Crowe Street in Gort late on Sunday night and later fired a number of shots at garda patrol cars that arrived on the scene.

He eventually emerged from the house last night firing at Gardai, who returned one live round of ammunition after a number of non-lethal beanbag rounds failed to disable him.

The man was hit in the chest/shoulder area and Gardai say he is now recovering at University College Hospital in Galway, where he is understood to be in a stable condition.
