Ahern criticises some employers' attitude towards pensions

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has criticised the attitude of certain employers towards the provision of pensions to their workers.

Speaking at a conference hosted by the Labour Relations Commission in Dublin today, he warned businesses that they could not ignore their employees' pension rights and entitlements.

Mr Ahern also said profitable companies could not claim that pensions were affecting their viability, but added that his comments were not aimed at Bank of Ireland.

The bank is currently in dispute with its workers after deciding to close off its defined benefit scheme to new staff and instead offer them a "hybrid" scheme.

The IBOA says the move will create a two-tier system and smacks of corporate greed.
