Brennan backs Taoiseach over 1993 payments controversy

Social and Family Affairs Minister Seamus Brennan has come out in support of the Taoiseach as he faces mounting political pressure over the payments he received 13 years ago.

The Mahon Tribunal is currently investigating payments to Bertie Ahern from a number of wealthy businessmen while he was Minister for Finance in 1993.

Opposition politicians say they will demand a Dail statement clarifying the situation if Mr Ahern does not reveal the amounts he received, the identity of the donors and why the money was not declared to the Standards in Public Office Commission.

However, Mr Brennan said today that the Taoiseach could count on the support of his colleagues in relation to the controversy.

He also suggested that Mr Ahern would make some kind of statement on the matter in the coming days.
