Greens have yet to receive contact from Ahern

The Green Party has said that it has not yet been contacted by the Taoiseach following reports that Bertie Ahern wants to have direct talks with the party leader, Trevor Sargent.

Green negotiator Dan Boyle said he and his colleagues have been reading the Fianna F€il leader's article in today's Sunday Independent newspaper with "as much interest as everyone else'".

Talks between the two sides ended without agreement on Friday - but both have indicated that the door remains open.

Mr Boyle said the Taoiseach's article sends a 'clear message' to Green supporters that he feels there's still a possibility that a deal can be done.

He stated that the Greens would have to give the matter 'serious consideration' if the intention is to help bridge the gaps between the two parties.

"If the Taoiseach feels there are grounds in which some of those issues can be addressed, and the best way of doing it is to contact Trevor Sargent, then there's a possibility that things might be revived," he said.
