Minister confirms set up of Dublin Transportation Authority

Published 09/11/2006

The Transport Minister has confirmed the establishment of a Dublin Transportation Authority.

It will have overall responsibility for the delivery of fourteen billion euro worth of projects under Transport 21 in the greater Dublin area, which includes Kildare, Meath and Wicklow.

It's also going to be in charge of traffic management, bus and rail fares and overall integration of the transport in the capital.

Minister Martin Cullen said today it will bring us into line with other major capitals:

"What I want to do is to get what they have in some of the other capital cities where the agencies are the deliverers of the different modes of transport.

He added, that, "they do so in a cohesive way under an over-arching body which allows us to get the best out of the bus system, the best out of the Luas system, the best out of the DART and that they're not forces competing with each other but they're all part of a coherent system."
