City council to subsidise cost of bottled water for residents

Published 11/04/2007

Galway City Council is planning to subsidise the cost of bottled water for residents as a result of the contamination of the local water supply.

Around 90,000 people have had to boil their water or buy bottles in the shops for the past few weeks as a result of the cryptosporidium contamination.

The city council is set to announce details of a subsidy scheme today as part of its measures for dealing with the crisis.

It also wants the Government to provide funding to allow people on social welfare get free bottled water.

Councillors are to hold a special meeting this evening to discuss the ongoing outbreak.
