Harney expresses regret at findings of Leas Cross report

Published 10/11/2006

The government and the Health Service are being blamed for what's being described as institutional abuse at the Leas Cross nursing home in North Dublin.

An Independent report carried out by Professor Des O'Neil has said the standards of care there were deficient at many levels.

He also revealed how the situation at Leas Cross is not an isolated incident.

The report says urgent action is needed to ensure that faith can be restored in the quality of nursing home care in Ireland.

Minister for Health Mary Harney said today, "It's very upsetting.

"I think the report shows a total lack of respect for older people and their dignity.

"In this instance, older people and their families were badly let down and I very much regret that."
