Irish people planning major spending spree this Christmas

A survey by the accountancy firm Deloitte is predicting another bumper Christmas for retailers in Ireland this year.

The survey has found that the average Irish household is planning to spend more than €1,300 over the festive period, a rise of 10% on last year.

The figure is twice the European average and even leaves the US in the shade.

More than half of the total is set to be spent on gifts, with the remainder going mainly towards socialising and food.
