Joe O'Reilly begins a life sentence for murdering his wife.

Joe O'Reilly has spent his first night in prison for murdering his wife Rachel, at their home in the Naul, in October 2004.

The 35-year-old was convicted of the crime yesterday by a unanimous verdict.

He was handed a mandatory life sentence.

O'Reilly sat pale but impassive in the dock after he was convicted.

The outcome was greeted in the packed court by loud cheers and applause.

When the court was cleared O'Reilly was embraced by his mother, brother and sister, before being transported by a prison van to serve the first night of his life term.

Speaking outside the court Rachel's mother Rose Callely extended her thanks to everyone who supported her family since Rachel's murder.

She also thanked the Gardai for all their hard work.
