Political parties to gear up for Euro referendum

The main political parties are to begin preparing their referendum campaigns in the coming weeks.

However the Green Party is expected to play a low key role in the campaign.

The Greens face a potentially difficult year having to continue to balance the responsibility of being in government with the need to be seen to retain their core beliefs and independence.

There are already some indications that the party's qualified support for the EU Reform Treaty may prove a bridge too far for some of its supporters.

The party is hoping that it does not become bogged down in controversy on the issue and will be able to focus on its main priorities of planning its assault on the local and European elections in 2009
