Six arrested as Gardai raid nine brothels countrywide

Gardaí have raided nine brothels in a major crack-down on human trafficking.

Six people were arrested following a series of searches across ten counties today.

This was a joint operation with detectives in the North and in Wales, targeting a gang which they believe is trafficking women into Ireland and the UK for sexual exploitation.

Detectives raided nine brothels in Cavan, Drogheda, Athlone, Mullingar, Sligo, Kilkenny, Enniscorthy, Newbridge and Waterford, and six other locations were searched in Carlow.

The operation involved the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the National Immigration Bureau and the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation.

Four women and two men ranging in age from their mid-20s and early 50s were arrested, and are being questioned on suspicion of organising or managing prostitution.
