A 19-year-old man who had sex with a 14-year-old girl has been jailed for 12 months at the Central Criminal Court.
Paul O'Connor, from Greenfield Close in Maynooth, Co Kildare, pleaded guilty to sexual intercourse with a child under 15 years of age in a Kildare town in June 2006.
This was the first case of its kind as enacted in the 2006 legislation to come before the court.
The court heard he cooperated fully with the Gardaí and was in ignorance of the legal situation about the girl's age.
Mr Justice Paul Carney said the age difference was significant and this was wholly against the victim's wishes.
He said he didn't want to declare him a sex offender, but this was mandatory.
