Thousands to run through Port Tunnel for charity

A charity race through Dublin's Port tunnel is taking place later today.

A maximum of ten thousand runners will take part in this once-off ten kilometre fun run.

This is the only chance that anyone will ever get to run, jog or walk under Dublin city through the Port tunnel.

The 10 kilometre fun race will mark the opening of the tunnel, which is the largest ever civil engineering project undertaken by the state.

It will also help to raise funds for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

The race will start at 11 o' clock this morning at the tunnel's entrance in the East Wall area of Dublin's Docklands.

Competitors will run the length of the tunnel, as far as Santry and back again.

And everyone who takes part will get an engraved souvenir medallion and a special commemorative T-shirt.
