Three men arrested in Cork following attack on Garda unit

Gardai are questioning three men arrested earlier this afternoon in connection with a disturbance at a halting site in Glanmire in Cork.

The men were part of a group who attacked a garda unit in an incident believed to be connected to the death last night of a man in a crash on the South Link road.

The disturbance began at around 10.30am when members from the travelling community allegedly smashed the windows of three garda patrol cars in upper Glenmire.

The situation quickly worsened and the garda public order unit were called in.

Cars belonging to passers by were also badly damaged and a garda was taken to Cork University Hospital to be treated for eye injuries after he was hit by a glass bottle.

Three men were arrested and a number of weapons were seized in the incident which is believed to be connected to last night's fatal car chase which resulted in the death of a man in his late 30s.

The man is believed to have been a member of the travelling community and failed to stop at a garda checkpoint in Watergrasshill.

Three patrol cars gave chase to the man and he lost control of his car on the south link road crashing into a ditch.
