Two appear in Athlone court over stabbing of Garda

Two men have appeared before a special sitting of Athlone District Court charged in connection with the stabbing of a Garda in County Westmeath.

A 20-year-old has been charged with assault causing harm to Garda Aidan Lyons from the Longford-Westmeath Drugs Unit.

A 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with having an article capable of inflicting serious injury.

Judge Michael Reilly refused them bail and remanded them in custody to appear before Athlone District Court again next Tuesday.

Garda Aidan Lyons who received four stab wounds to his upper arm is to undergo surgery today.
