Wicklow man jailed for life for Neligan murder

A 26-year-old County Wicklow man has been jailed for life for murdering the daughter of well-known surgeon Maurice Neligan.

Brian McBarron, originally from Arklow, told Gardai he cut Sara Neligan's throat and stabbed her a number of times because he himself wanted to die and he wanted to take her with him as she was his.

The court heard the 31-year-old nurse had been planning to leave him on the morning her body was discovered, the 14th of June 2007.

He pleaded guilty to her murder earlier today.

In a letter of apology to the Neligan family, McBarron said he'd live the rest of his life in shame and embarrassment because of his brutal and thoughtless crime.

Solicitor and friend of the Neligan family Brendan Walsh said this would give them some closure and allow them to move on with their lives.
