The South African President has said he's optimistic that he will succeed in mediating Zimbabwe's political crisis.
Thabo Mbeki said it was widely acknowledged there were problems in Zimbabwe, and that these needed to be solved with a "united response" of the country's people.
Mbeki was appointed mediator at an emergency southern African summit in Tanzania earlier this week.
He has been criticised at home and abroad for his insistence on a quiet diplomacy approach to Zimbabwe.
Already there are doubts over the possible success of the process, despite Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's endorsement on Friday, as fresh assaults were reported on opposition activists in the country.
