The South African parliament has passed landmark new legislation paving the way for gay marriage.
The move is unprecedented on a continent where homosexuality is taboo.
The ruling African National Congress has hailed the new bill for extending basic freedoms under the spirit of the country's first post-apartheid constitution.
However, traditionalists and religious leaders say they are saddened by the move and have warned that South Africa is "provoking God's anger".
