70 Tamil Tigers killed in major sea battle in Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan Navy is claiming to have sunk 11 Tamil Tiger rebel ships during a five-hour battle off the country's east coast this morning.

The navy says the vessels were loaded with rebel fighters and weapons.

It says 70 insurgents were killed during this morning's clash and two other boats believed to be transporting arms and ammunition were also burning at sea.
