At least nine killed as typhoon hits Japan

At least nine people have been killed by a powerful storm that slammed into western Japan today, triggering floods and landslides.

Nine others have also been reported missing in Hyogo state, which is bearing the brunt of Typhoon Etau.

More than 2,000 people have been evacuated from their homes.

Meanwhile, nearly one million people have been evacuated from their homes in eastern China as Typhoon Morakot continues to lash the area with strong winds and heavy rain.

The storm has already caused widespread flooding in Taiwan.
