Small tsunami hits northern Japan after strong earthquake

Published 15/11/2006

Warnings of a large tsunami heading for Japan appear to have been premature, with no major waves reported in the country so far,

Meteorologists had warned that waves of at least 6.5 feet would hit the country's northern and eastern coast at 12.10pm Irish time following a strong earthquake east of the Etorofu Islands.

TV and radio stations urged coastal residents to move to higher ground, but the only tsunami reported by 12.45pm was a small wave estimated at 16 inches.

A tsunami warning is also in place on Russia's Pacific Coast following the 8.1-magnitude earthquake, but there are no reports of any injuries or damage so far.
