Laboratory suspected source of foot and mouth disease outbreak

Published 05/08/2007

There are growing fears that the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in England has been caused by a leak from a nearby animal research centre.

Government officials in the UK have said the strain of the virus found in infected cattle is the same as one being used at the nearby Pirbright laboratory but they say they can't say for definite that the two are linked.

Britain's Chief Veterinary Officer Debby Reynolds has said they are investigating the possibility of a connection.
