MEP Aylward calls for Europe wide depression awareness campaign

Published 29/10/2006

Fianna Fail MEP Liam Aylward has called for a European-wide awareness campaign to focus on mental illness and depression.

New statistics reveal that a quarter of all people in the EU suffer from mental health problems at some time in their lives.

Liam Aylward said that every family in Ireland has been affected by depression at some stage, and an information campaign would help remove some of the stigma

The MEP added that the budget is already in the commission to launch an information campaign on the issue.

Also, MEP Aylward said he has written to governments in other countries asking will they join this political initiative.
