Pope calls for peace in his Christmas message

Published 25/12/2006

The Pope has delivered his Christmas message at the Vatican.

Benedict XVI said despite advances in technology and massive achievements by mankind, we can't live without God or turn our backs on the hungry.

He also appealed for peace in the Middle East, an end to violence in Iraq and a solution to problems in Africa.

At the end of his speech, the Pope delighted the thousands of pilgrims and tourists who packed the St Peter's Square by delivering Christmas greetings in more than 60 languages.
