Smoking ban takes affect in France and Germany

Published 01/01/2008

Smokers across France braved chilly weather today to light up on the pavements as a smoking ban took affect.

Restaurant and caf€ owners predicted hard financial times as the ban took affect.

Eight states in neighbouring Germany also launched restrictions on smoking in

bars and restaurants.

French officials gave smokers a New Year's Day reprieve, saying they would only start enforcing the ban on Wednesday though many Paris cafes and restaurants have already gone smoke free.
