Thousands of people have gathered in St Peter's Square in Rome for the largest beatification ceremony ever.
Almost 500 victims of religious persecution before and during Spain's civil war have been put on the path to possible sainthood.
Spanish bishops were joined by a host of politicians and pilgrims for the ceremony.
The church estimates that nearly 7,000 clergy were killed in Spain between 1931 and 1939.
