18 Palestinian civilians killed by Israeli shells in Gaza
At least 18 Palestinian women and children have been killed in their sleep during an Israeli attack in the northern Gaza Strip this morning.
Officials say at least 40 others were also injured when around five Israeli tank shells hit a residential neighbourhood north of the town of Beit Hanoun.
The Israeli military only withdrew from the town yesterday following a week-long raid that left at least 50 Palestinians dead.
Hospital officials say those killed in this morning's attack included seven children and 13 of the victims were members of the same family.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has declared three days of mourning in response to the atrocity.
