French soldiers 'within seconds' of firing at Israeli jets

The French Government has revealed that its peacekeepers came within seconds of firing missiles at Israeli fighter jets over south Lebanon.

France's Defence Minister said last night that the jets approached French positions as if preparing to attack and the peacekeepers were "two seconds away from firing at the planes".

She has accused Israeli of deliberately adopting a hostile attitude to UN peacekeepers in south Lebanon and described the situation as "not tolerable".

Israel has continued to fly fighter jets over south Lebanon since the end of the recent conflict in the region - a breach of the UN-sponsored ceasefire that ended the hostilities.
