Iraqi security force members detained over bombings

Published 29/10/2009

More than 60 members of the Iraqi security forces have been arrested in connection with the twin bombings that killed 153 people in Baghdad over the weekend.

The detainees include 11 senior officers and the commanders of 15 checkpoints close to where the bombings took place.

An al-Qa'ida-linked group called Islamic State of Iraq has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which targeted the headquarters of the Baghdad Governorate and the Ministry for Justice.

The fact that the bombers were able to carry out the attack despite tight security has raised questions about the competence of the Iraqi security forces.
