Israel refuses to conduct Gaza war inquiry

The Israeli Government says it will not be conducting an independent inquiry into the conduct of its military attack on the Gaza Strip last December and January.
Yesterday, the UN said both the Israeli military and Palestinian militants committed war crimes during the conflict.
A UN investigation found that Israel used disproportionate firepower and disregarded the safety of civilians, while Hamas militants indiscriminately fired rockets into civilian areas of Israel.
The UN recommended that Israel conduct an independent inquiry into the matter or face the prospect of having the case referred to the International Criminal Court.
However, the Israeli Government said today that it would not be conducting any such inquiry and would launch a diplomatic offensive to block any referral to the ICC.
