McCain and Clinton win Presidential nominations in South Carolina and Nevada

Published 20/01/2008

Republican John McCain and Democrat Hilary Clinton have emerged victorious after tight races for the Presidential nominations in South Carolina and Nevada.

John McCain defeated rival Mike Huckabee in the key US state of South Carolina where his Presidential hopes were destroyed in 2000 when he stood against George Bush.

Speaking afterward he said he wasn't running for President to be somebody, but to do something.

Meanwhile in Nevada, Hillary Clinton won the Democratic presidential caucus, leading Barack Obama by 51 per cent to 45.

The former first lady said she was thrilled and that she wants to bring accountability back to government.
