Two dead and dozens feared hurt in power plant explosion in Connecticut, USA

At least two people died and dozens more are feared injured in an explosion at a power plant in Middletown, Connecticut, USA.

Betsy Hard, deputy commissioner of the state Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, said she did not know how many people were killed or how many were injured in the explosion.

Local reports said at least two people were dead.

Ms Hard said search and rescue teams were on their way to the plant and Middletown authorities have asked surrounding communities for help.

Al Santostefano, the deputy fire marshal in Middletown, said the explosion occurred at 11.17am (1617 GMT) at the Kleen Energy power plant. The blast destroyed parts of the building.

He said 50 workers were inside at the time.
